Where Good Ideas Come From

A book for building conditions in which ideas can connect

Steven Johnson challenges the lone-genius story and asks how networks, partial insights, mistakes, and neighbouring possibilities make innovation possible.

Why Read It

Where Good Ideas Come From is a corrective to the familiar story of the wholly solitary breakthrough. Steven Johnson argues that useful ideas often begin as fragments: a half-formed hunch, an overlooked mistake, a borrowed technique, or a connection between people who normally work apart.

The book’s central idea is the adjacent possible. At any moment, some next steps become feasible because the parts, knowledge, and tools already exist; other steps remain out of reach for now (Johnson, ch. 1). Johnson pairs that idea with liquid networks—environments where ideas can circulate, meet, and take new shapes (Johnson, ch. 2) —and with the slow hunch, the insight that an unfinished thought may need time and another idea before it becomes useful (Johnson, ch. 3).

These are valuable habits for writers, students, designers, and teams. Keep a place for fragments rather than discarding every incomplete thought. Read or talk beyond your immediate specialty. Put related problems beside one another. Then ask a modest question: given what is already available, what is the next workable experiment? The adjacent possible encourages movement without pretending every bold idea is ready to build.

Johnson’s recurring patterns are a framework, not a law of invention. A network can generate noise as easily as insight, and openness does not remove the need for skill, evidence, funding, or ethical judgment. Use the book to design better conditions for curiosity and collaboration, not to claim that any connection will become a breakthrough.

The Idea Before the Breakthrough

Johnson’s account makes unfinished thinking worth preserving. A note that cannot yet become an argument may become useful when a later observation gives it context. The author’s task is partly to create a practice in which earlier fragments can be found again.

A commonplace file can help, but collection alone is insufficient. Record why an item interested you, where it came from, and what question remains open. Revisit the file periodically and remove connections that no longer hold. Otherwise a store of fragments becomes an archive of enthusiasm with little capacity to support work.

In chapter 1, Johnson explicitly credits theoretical biologist and complexity scientist Stuart Kauffman with coining the term adjacent possible (Johnson, ch. 1). Johnson’s contribution here is its use within an accessible account of innovation and the environments that support it.

Make a Connection Testable

Choose two problems that appear related and state the relationship in one sentence. Identify which component might transfer and what would need to change. Then design a small test that could show the analogy is unhelpful.

For a writer, this might mean trying a scientific explanation as a structural model for an essay, then checking whether it actually clarifies the argument. Shared vocabulary is not enough. A useful connection preserves a relationship that does explanatory work.

What an Innovation Story Can Hide

Histories of successful ideas can underrepresent the many equally connected projects that led nowhere. That selection makes it difficult to infer how often a proposed habit produces a breakthrough. The stories can offer possibilities without proving that a particular environment reliably causes success.

Johnson’s conclusion calls attention to the fourth quadrant: networked innovation outside the market (Johnson, Conclusion). In his historical survey, he shows that open, non-market networks contributed more to foundational breakthroughs than familiar proprietary stories suggest (Johnson, Conclusion). That is his historical interpretation, not proof that openness always produces better results.

Openness also depends on resources and power. Who has time to participate? Who receives credit for the connection? Who owns the result? A collaborative culture should make those questions explicit rather than assume circulation benefits everyone equally.

Edition and Audience

The reference is the 2010 Riverhead edition. Keep the subtitle, The Natural History of Innovation, in view: analogies with living systems are part of the book’s explanatory approach, and should be assessed as carefully as its historical cases.

This is a useful choice for writers, teachers, and people organizing collaborative projects. It is especially helpful when a team treats idea generation as an isolated meeting instead of a continuing practice of observation, recording, exchange, and revision.

An unfinished note need not be a failed idea. Its value may depend on whether you preserve its source, return to its question, and eventually find someone who can see a connection you missed.
