A history of the unexpected chains behind ordinary things

Why Read It

How We Got to Now makes technological history feel close at hand. Steven Johnson follows six innovations—glass, cold, sound, clean, time, and light—not as isolated inventions but as starting points for chains of change (Johnson, Contents).

Johnson calls this the hummingbird effect: an innovation in one field can enable unexpected changes in another through a chain of connected developments. Unlike the butterfly effect’s sensitivity to tiny initial differences, his emphasis is on connections that historians can trace across apparently separate domains (Johnson, Introduction).

The practical lesson is to trace consequences beyond the first use. When encountering a new tool or policy, ask what it makes easier, what new dependencies it creates, who gains access first, and whose work or environment bears the cost. Also look backward: which overlooked materials, public systems, and shared standards made the apparent breakthrough possible? This kind of network mapping is useful for research, design, editing, and civic discussion.

Johnson’s chosen stories necessarily simplify a crowded history. They are not a substitute for histories centred on labour, colonialism, environmental harm, or the people excluded from an innovation’s benefits. But they are a strong introduction to the fact that inventions have afterlives, and that their consequences are often stranger than their original purpose.

Consequences Beyond the Intended Use

In “Glass,” Johnson connects the spread of printing to increased demand for reading glasses. Spectacles already existed; the expansion of reading increased demand for them. The resulting lens-making activity helped create conditions for microscopes and telescopes—tools that changed what people could investigate (Johnson, “Glass”). The interest lies in the transfer from helping readers see a page to making previously inaccessible phenomena observable.

The practical question is how to tell such a history without making the later result look inevitable. Once you know where a chain ends, earlier events can seem arranged to produce it. A stronger account identifies which connections were contingent and which alternatives remained open.

An Exercise in Following a Material

Select one ordinary material or service and map three stages: what made it possible, the problem it first addressed, and a later use outside that problem. For each connection, distinguish a documented influence from an analogy you find suggestive.

Glass offers an especially approachable starting point because its uses involve seeing, containing, and transmitting. You do not need to write a complete history. The aim is to notice when a physical property becomes useful in a new setting and which additional skills or institutions make that transfer work.

Then add the costs. Who made the object? Which resources were consumed? Who could access the new capability? Those questions prevent a chain of ingenuity from becoming a story in which benefits appear automatically and labour stays invisible.

Usefulness and Its Limits

A memorable chain can make a good teaching device, but it is not a method for predicting the next social transformation. Unexpected effects are easier to identify afterward than to anticipate. The book is more useful for broadening an investigation than for promising that an innovation will generate a particular outcome.

Its six organizing subjects also overlap. Clean water depends on materials, energy, institutions, and measurement; timekeeping has social as well as technical histories. Treat the headings as routes through a connected world rather than separate compartments.

Edition and Audience

The 2014 Riverhead book accompanied a television series. The book and broadcast should be cited separately because they differ in presentation and available detail. A remembered scene needs an episode reference; a claim taken from the book needs its own source location.

Choose this for a readable introduction to technological history, particularly if you enjoy beginning with objects rather than a political chronology. Read beside Smil, Johnson emphasizes unexpected connections while Smil foregrounds material capacity and scale.

A pair of reading glasses becomes more interesting when its history reaches beyond the person wearing it. Johnson gives that curiosity a method: follow the material, identify the connection, and keep asking who else was involved.
