In Macbeth, blood is never only a sign that someone has been injured. It is evidence, memory, inheritance, and prediction. The image changes as Macbeth’s relationship to violence changes: what begins as a visible consequence of battle becomes a stain he wants to remove, then a sign that his mind cannot escape, and finally the political environment of the kingdom he has made.

Lady Macbeth Cannot Make Macbeth Ambitious

The claim that Lady Macbeth “makes” Macbeth ambitious is attractive because it gives the tragedy a simple explanation. Macbeth begins as an honourable soldier, the argument goes, and his wife supplies the corruption. She reads his letter, recognizes an opportunity, attacks his hesitation, and helps organize Duncan’s murder. Once the deed is done, however, Macbeth becomes increasingly violent without her direction. The play therefore asks us to distinguish between causing a desire and exploiting one.

Macbeth and Banquo Hear the Same Prophecy

Macbeth and Banquo hear the same supernatural voices, but they do not receive the prophecy in the same way. Instead, they alter the way he understands possibility.
